Gutter & Solar panel cleaning across Adelaide

Solar panels are a big investment, it makes sense to look after them. And though gutters aren’t the most glamorous feature of your home, keeping them clean is critical in preventing water damage and avoiding fire risk.

Solar panels have a lifespan of approximately 25 years and can save you a lot of money in energy bills over the long term. You’ve invested a lot of money, so it makes sense to look after your investment and ensure your solar panels run efficiently over their lifetime.

During winter, rain running off solar panels will generally help to keep them clean. However, rain can be scarce during Adelaide’s long hot summer. This is when dirt and grime can build up on your solar panels and may impact their performance. Tree branches, leaves and bird droppings can also affect performance if left to build up over time.

When installing solar panels, it’s best to ensure there are no overhanging tree branches. Not only will the shade impair the panel’s solar output (one shaded cell out of 60 cells can impact solar output by 30-40%!), dirt and debris, such as leaves and pollen, will increase the need for constant maintenance. Not to mention the risk of branches falling in severe weather, which could damage the panels.

How to clean solar panels

Cleaning solar panels is similar to cleaning windows. For best results, use a soft sponge or brush, so you don’t scratch the glass. You can use a mild household detergent but be sure to thoroughly rinse and wipe the panels with a soft cloth or chamois to ensure you don’t leave any residue.

If you don’t have the confidence, ability or safety equipment required to go up on your roof, leave the hard work to us; after all, that’s what we’re here for!

The importance of solar panel cleaning in coastal areas

Sun, sand and salty sea breeze. Soaking these up on a daily basis are just some of the benefits of living along our beautiful South Australian coast. While these elements may be good for your soul, they can cause havoc to your house and solar panels. Living along the coast requires constant home maintenance, and solar panels are no exception.

Over time, the salt in the sea breeze builds up, crystalising on the glass of solar panels, which can reduce their efficiency and erode the panel framework. Regular solar panel cleaning will decrease salt build-up, ensure they work to maximum capacity and extend their life. We recommend cleaning your solar panels every six months if you live near the beach.

    Solar panels and bird waste

Solar energy has been embraced across Adelaide, and solar panels have become increasingly popular on new house builds or renovations. With more and more trees chopped down to make way for the urban spread, birds are being creative when finding new homes. Increasingly birds are nesting under and around solar panels.

This isn’t great news for your roof or solar panels. Bird droppings are concentrated around the nesting area and quickly build up. Bird nests can also attract other pests, such as rats and cockroaches, contributing to the mess. Like salt, bird droppings can be corrosive if left on solar panels and stain your roof.

When do you pay any attention to your gutters? Is it as you’re admiring the vegetation growing from them on the way back from the letterbox? Or as you’re watching a spontaneous waterfall after a sudden downpour? Hopefully, it’s not while frantically collecting towels after that external waterfall turned into an internal water feature through your roof.

Though gutters may be a little ‘out of sight, out of mind’, blocked gutters can cause serious damage to your home and lead to expensive repairs. You don’t want to only think of them after the damage is done.

Avoid risking blocked gutters with regular gutter cleaning

Blocked gutters can cause all sorts of problems. Gutters are designed to move water away from your roof and house foundations. When debris like leaves and sticks accumulate, water can’t flow freely. As the water pools, it starts to overflow and spill onto your roof, down the siding, and around the foundation. Over time, this can lead to:

Water damage: Water that spills over your gutters can damage your roof, sidings, and foundation. It can also cause leaks and mould growth inside your home.

Pest infestations: Stagnant water in gutters can attract mosquitoes and other pests, such as cockroaches who come to feed on decaying vegetation.

Structural and foundation damage: When water can’t escape from the building structure, it can cause cracks in the walls and the surrounding ground. Over time these cracks expand, causing structural damage.

Landscape damage: Overflowing water can erode landscaping close to your house.

Fire risk: Opposite to water damage but just as important – uncleared debris in gutters can ignite if it dries out during a heatwave, posing a fire hazard to your home.

Why is regular gutter cleaning important?

Now you understand the risks of blocked gutters, it’s important to recognise why regular maintenance is crucial. Regular gutter cleaning can:

Prevent damage: Regular cleaning will prevent water from overflowing and causing the damage mentioned above to your home and landscaping.

Protect your investment: Regular maintenance can extend the life of your gutters and prevent costly repairs or replacements.

Maintain kerb appeal: Clean gutters improve the appearance of your home and enhance curb appeal. This is especially important if you’re getting ready to sell your house. You want to attract the highest price possible!

Ensure you’re covered by insurance: Home insurance policies vary in terms of the types of damage they cover. Some policies may not cover damage caused by blocked gutters, while others may offer limited coverage. You can read more about insurance coverage and blocked drains here.
