Bird proofing solar panels

Bird netting is an important element in looking after your solar panels. Birds (hello pigeons) love to nest under their shelter, which can cause a few problems.

Why are birds roosting around your solar panels a problem?

Bird droppings are corrosive – they can damage your solar panels if left too long. They’re acidic and can create ‘hot spots‘ on your panels, making them less efficient.

Bird nests can block airflow under the panels which can reduce their efficiency. They can also attract vermin and other pests which can be problematic if they decide to nibble on the electrical wiring.

What areas can you bird proof?

Bird proofing doesn’t apply only to solar panels. Birds take shelter wherever they can on building structures. While netting is great in preventing birds from nesting under solar panels, spikes and mesh can be applied to different areas around your property.

They’re made from durable materials like galvanised steel mesh, so they last for years.

Both are versatile solutions for residential, commercial, and industrial properties.

Is bird proofing solar panels worth it?

Deciding whether to invest in bird proofing for your solar panels—or any other area—can be tricky.

If you’re debating whether to add bird proofing, it’s a decision worth careful consideration.

While it might seem an unnecessary cost initially, birds nesting and leaving droppings can decrease panel efficiency and increase maintenance costs.

Retrofitting bird netting or spikes can be challenging and costly, but the benefits can outweigh the cost.

    Bird proofing:

      • protects your property by preventing further damage
      • improves hygiene and safety
      • maintains optimal solar power production
      • saves you from larger, more expensive problems down the track.
